Hands-on echo teaching course

Colour-Doppler-echocardiography plays an important role in interventional cardiac procedures in congenital heart disease; it helps to guide and control the procedures. Moreover, it is extremely valuable in the assessment of the congenital heart disease prior to an interventional cardiac procedure. Particularly in the assessment of patients with persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA), atrial septum defect of the secundum type (ASD II), perimembranous ventricular septum defect (VSD) and coarctation (CoA) transthoracic colour-Doppler-echocardiography is an absolute requirement.

Therefore a basic echo-course for beginners (normal anatomy) and an advanced-course (pathology) for pediatric cardiologist working in the field of interventional cardiology are part of CSI Africa 2018.

The main aim of the hands-on beginners echocardiography course is to learn to perform a thorough echocardiography study of the normal heart.

A thorough pre-selection of patients with PDA, ASD II and VSD aids in the successful interventional cardiac procedure and will avoid not-indicated catheterization attempts. This will further encourage a more reasonable use of resources. Furthermore, timing of the intended procedures may be adjusted to the availability of the required closure devices and sizes.

The main aims of the hands-on advanced echocardiography course are to learn the specific needs of the interventional cardiologist as well as to perform a thorough intervention-focused transthoracic colour-Doppler-echocardiography. Therefore, the course addresses both the echocardiographer and interventionalist. The four different congenital abnormalities - PDA, ASD II, (perimembranous and muscular) VSD and coarctation - will be echoed hands-on in small groups. Children with these cardiac defects and their parents are volunteering to make this unique hands-on training possible.

Pediatric cardiac interventionalists Matthias Freund (Germany), Maiy El Sayed (Egypt), Naomi Gachara (Kenya), Christine Awuor Yuko-Jowi (Kenya), Jayneel Aswin Joshi (South Africa), Allison Cabalka (USA), Lungile Pepeta (South Africa) and Harun Otieno (Kenya) will perform the hands-on course.

The course only accepts a limited number of participants, hence early registration is advised. Please register by sending email to Stanislava Kolková at s.kolkova@cme4u.org
