As a pioneer in innovative pediatric cardiology medicine, Dr. Farhouch specializes in cardiac catheterization and therapeutic cardiac catheterization. In collaboration with cardiothoracic surgery at the CHOC Children’s Heart Institute, Dr. Berdjis worked to provide the groundbreaking pulmonary therapy, the Melody Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve (TPV), for children with pulmonary illnesses, including tetralogy of Fallot, the most common form of cyanotic (bluish coloration) congenital heart disease.

Dedicated to this life-changing endeavor, Dr. Berdjis trained for several months to become certified to perform Melody TPV. Since then, many CHOC patients have benefited from his expertise, including a 13-year-old girl who returned to playing volleyball, an activity that had previously proved too taxing.

Melody TPV is an example of the groundbreaking therapies that make CHOC a leader in pediatric medicine, and we are extremely proud to be at the forefront of this technology, - Dr. Berdji

A leader in clinical excellence, Dr. Berdjis is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. Prior to joining CHOC Children’s, Dr. Berdjis received his medical degree from the University of Wurzburg in in Germany. He completed his internship at Children’s Hospital of the University of Munich and served his residency and fellowship training at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and Wyler’s Children’s Hospital/University of Chicago.

QUALIFICATIONS: MBBCh; MSc(Med); FCP(Paed); PhD, FESC
POSITION TITLE:                                                                                                                                      -Senior Consultant Department of Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiologist, Emma Children’s Hospital, Academic Medical Center (AMC), Amsterdam, The Netherlands                          -Head Fetal Cardiology, Center for Congenital Heart Defects Amsterdam-Leiden (CAHAL), The Netherlands

I was born in South Africa, and completed my pediatric and pediatric cardiology training there. I am a trained interventional pediatric cardiologist with a special interest in fetal cardiology and rhythm disturbances. I am the head of fetal cardiology in the Amsterdam-Leiden area. The success in our area, of the relatively late introduction of a national program screening for fetal cardiac defects, (2007), has resulted in a prenatal detection rate of congenital heart abnormalities of 73% in our region. This is not only due to a well-organized central controlling body overseeing the certification of sonographers and performing quality-control checks, but also due to ongoing training and stimulation programs of which I am an integral part. The AMC is also a center of expertise for inheritable arrhythmias and has the largest clinical practice for patients with long QT syndrome (LQTS) in the Netherlands (>200 mutation positive subjects in our database). Most of the LQTS children and some fetuses are under my care. I am currently involved in an international program to improve the prenatal diagnosis of fetal LQTS. I supervise PhD, Masters and Bachelor students’ research projects and have been an invited speaker at international conferences and teaching courses and review journal articles for international journals. I am the cardiac advisor for the Dutch cot-death society, and have been the scientific secretary and council member of the Association of European Pediatric Cardiologists (AEPC) fetal working group. I am also a mother of two lovely boys and enjoy painting, karate, tango dancing and playing the clarinet.

Dr. Hijazi is an interventional cardiologist who specializes in treating congenital & structural heart disease in both children and adults.  He is a pioneer in the non-surgical repair of congenital and structural heart defects.

After graduation from medical school and upon completion of his internship in Amman, Jordan, Dr. Hijazi came to the United States to begin postgraduate training in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University, where he was subsequently awarded a Masters of Public Health.  He remained at Yale University where he completed a residency in Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology. Upon completion of his fellowship training, he joined the faculty at Tufts University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. In 1997 he was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine, and in 1999 Dr. Hijazi accepted faculty appointment at the University of Chicago as Endowed Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine and Chief of the division of cardiology. He has been successful in building a preeminent Pediatric Cardiology Program, which is nationally and internationally recognized for its outstanding clinical service and innovative technologies. In 2007 Dr. Hijazi became the Director of the Rush Center for Congenital and Structural Heart Disease at Rush University Medical Center and in 2010, he became the James A. Hunter, MD, University Chair.

His major area of interest is in the development of techniques and catheters/devices to help treat or cure congenital and structural cardiac disease without open-heart surgery. Dr. Hijazi is very prolific with more than 280 peer reviewed published articles, six books and over 40 book chapters. In 1994 he published an article describing the technique of multiple coil closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). His new technique enabled cardiologists to close moderate to large size PDAs using multiple coils. In 1997 he published the first results of the initial clinical use of the new Amplatzer septal occluder device for atrial septal defects (ASD).

Subsequently he has been a primary investigator in testing the Amplatzer family of intracardiac devices in the United States. Dr. Hijazi wrote the protocols for these trials and presented the results of these studies to the Food and Drug Administration. The trials have involved catheter closure of atrial septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, patent foramen ovale (PFO) and ventricular septal defects.  These studies resulted in the FDA approving the first ASD closure device for use in children in 2001. This study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 2002.

His work has not been limited to the non-surgical repair of cardiac defects. Dr. Hijazi was the first to describe how intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) can be used to assist in guiding transcatheter closure of ASD/PFO.

His annual Pediatric & Adult Interventional Cardiac Symposium (PICS/AICS)is a four-day conference which brings together a select international faculty who provide demonstrations, live operations and the latest research breakthroughs in interventional cardiology for congenital & structural heart disease. This symposium attracts more than 750 interventional cardiologists from more than 60 countries around the world. Based upon this model, he is currently establishing collaborative pediatric cardiology research and clinical programs in China.

Currently, Dr. Hijazi is involved in evaluating percutaneous valve implantation (without surgery) for patients with defected pulmonary valves, senile aortic valve stenosis and leaky mitral valves. He performed the first operation (Pulmonary valve implantation) of its kind in the USA December 13th, 2005 on a 16-year old boy successfully.

Further, he is currently involved with two companies to develop a percutaneous aortic valve for elderly patients with degenerative aortic valve stenosis.

Dr. Justino specializes in interventional cardiac catheterization (procedures whereby thin catheters are inserted into the body in order to diagnose or treat heart conditions). He performs a broad range of procedures including balloon valvuloplasty, balloon angioplasty, stent placement to treat narrowing (stenosis) in a variety of blood vessels (e.g. pulmonary arteries, coarctation, ductus arteriosus), occlusion of vascular anomalies, device closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects, device closure of ductus arteriosus, etc. He has additional specific expertise in the treatment of patients with acute or chronic thrombosis (clots), such as infants and children with superior vena cava syndrome, including the use of specialized equipment for removal of clots (thrombectomy).

Dr. Justino is also actively involved in the research and development of novel intracardiac devices for use in children and adults with congenital heart disease. Such devices may one day help reduce or eliminate the need for open-heart surgeries to repair certain heart defects. His laboratory actively collaborates with bioengineers at Rice University, and has received several grants supporting this important effort.

Dr. Justino is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology, and participates in all aspects of clinical pediatric cardiology, including inpatient care and outpatient clinic. He is actively involved in training future generations of physicians, and has won numerous teaching awards for his role in educating medical students, residents, and fellows. He is also committed to promoting quality improvement for pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratories on a national level.

Dr. Justino believes that patients and families should understand and participate thoroughly the care that they are receiving. He has lectured to several congenital heart disease family support groups, and is committed to promoting increased awareness and understanding of congenital heart disease.
