Prof. Celebi is head and director of Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Dr Siyami Ersek Hospital for Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery in one of the busiest pediatric heart centers in Turkey and Europe. Each year, the team at the pediatric heart center performs more than 800 cardiac catheterizations (mostly interventional), excess of 900 surgeries and about 15.000 echocardiographic examinations at outpatient clinics in infants, children and young adults with congenital heart disease.

Dr Çelebi received his board certifications in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty of İstanbul University, in 1993 and 1998 respectively. He became associated professor for pediatrics in 1999. In 2003, he was appointed as a chief of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology for starting new program in Dr Siyami Ersek Hospital for Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, in which no pediatric cardiac program has already been present. In a few years, the program has become busiest center in Turkey.

This center has been started and leaded a lot of interventions in Turkey for the first time, such as ductal stenting (> 120 cases up now), palliative pulmonary balloon valvuloplasty (>130 cases) for cyanotic newborns and infants, perventricular VSD closure (>15 cases), a lot of combined interventions (RV perforation and duct stenting in the same session etc.), ductus closure in infants with PAH <5 kg in weight, native RVOT valvulation. Between 2004-2014, near >800 ASD closure, >700 PDA closure, about 130 VSD closure have been performed in the same center as Dr Celebi is the primary operator in most or otherwise supervisor in all.

He became Professor in 2006. He is still working as Professor, chair and head of the Department of the Pediatric Cardiology.
In 2009-2011, he was elected as a member of council of Turkish Association of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, as scientific secretary between2011-2013, and a member of council again in 2013-2015.

CAREER DETAILS & EXPERIENCE

General Paediatrics

I have done general paediatrics in Abou El Reesh hospital (Cairo University Pediatric Hospital). This is the biggest teaching children hospital in Egypt with total bed capacity of 750 beds including five PICUs. It has got all the high technology equipment and it serves as a tertiary referral hospital for all of Egypt. I have finished extensive training starting as a resident and gained enormous experience from the heavy workload there.

I have also done general paediatrics as paediatric registrar in Alder Hey Children Hospital which is the biggest and oldest teaching children hospital in Europe. It is a tertiary referral hospital for all of the north west of England. I have done first on call for acute admissions as well as second on call for the inpatients. The job also included going on squads to transfer sick children from regional hospitals to the ICU in which I learnt how to stabilize critically ill children and transport medicine. I had rotating registrar post in Respiratory, endocrinology, gastroenterology and oncology.

Neonatology

I worked for 4 months in SCBU attached to the maternity in Cairo University Hospital, which receives 6000 deliveries per year. It had then 25 incubators with ventilatory facilities. I have done 6 months as SHO in neonates in Gravesend Hospital which is a peripheral hospital with 1500 deliveries per annum. I have done all neonatal procedures as neonatal lines, umbilical catheters, intercostal tubes and basic cranial sonography. I am now the head of neonatal cardiology unit.

Paediatric Cardiology Training

I have done around 17 years of  paediatric cardiology training. I have done both MSc and MD  thesis in cardiology. I have worked during my training for 6 years in paediatric cardiology in 3 different centers in England: Freeman hospital, Royal Manchester Children hospital (Pendelbury) and finally in Royal Liverpool Children hospital (Alder Hey). I spent most of the time in Alder Hey as SHO and then Specialist Registrar. The cardiology ward was 24 beds, cardiac ICU was joint with the general ICU and had12 cardiac beds. There were 400 paediatric cardiac surgeries per annum both open and closed and around 450 catheters per year mostly interventional. All activities are displayed on the hospital web site www.alderhey/cardiac.com .

Cairo University Paediatric Cardiology department is a tretiary referral unit for most of Egypt. The out patient clinics for all pediatric cardiology subspecialities. There are routine echo clinics daily with four up to date echocardiography machines. There is also echocardiography service to all ICUs, cath lab and cardiac theaters. There are 2 biplane catheter labs with around 400 cases yearly both diagnostic and interventional catheters are done.

Contributions in the field of Paediatric Cardiology

My recognised contribution to the field of paediatric cardiology include the description of the pulmonary artery diverticulum as a pathognomonic feature of William Syndrome (40), Pathogenesis of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (11), description of Spiral ASDs (), Multiplanar Reformating of 3D datasets (50), and a new technique for stent fenestration (7).
I also described a safe technique for retrieval of impacted central venous lines (8). I described for the first time the variation in the atrial septal angle and its role in the pathogenesis of unbalanced AVSDs (). I noticed AV valve angle variations in AVSDs and its impact on surgical repair and residual lesions (36). I also described the difference in mitral valve annular function in children compared to the adult heart (37). The rotational abnormality of the tricuspid valve in the Ebstein’s malformation and its detection using 3D MPR (39), occurrence of acquired combined immune deficiency in PLE (6), esmolol assisted stent angioplasty (28) and description of congenital coronary artery dilatation (10) are some of the other contributions I have made to the field of congenital heart disease.
