HANDS-ON ECHO TRAINING WORKSHOP

Colour-Doppler-echocardiography plays an important role in interventional cardiac procedures in congenital heart disease; it helps to guide and control the procedures. Moreover, it is extremely valuable in the assessment of the congenital heart disease prior to an interventional cardiac procedure. Particularly in the assessment of patients with persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA), atrial septum defect of the secundum type (ASD II) and perimembranous ventricular septum defect (VSD) transthoracic colour-Doppler-echocardiography is an absolute requirement.

A thorough pre-selection of patients with PDA, ASD II and VSD aids in the successful interventional cardiac procedure and will avoid not-indicated catheterization attempts. This will further encourage a more reasonable use of resources. Furthermore, timing of the intended procedures may be adjusted to the availability of the required closure devices and sizes.

The main aims of the hands-on echocardiography course are to learn the specific needs of the interventional cardiologist as well as to perform a thorough intervention-focused transthoracic colour-Doppler-echocardiography. Therefore, the course addresses both the echocardiographer and interventionalist. The three different congenital abnormalities: PDA, ASD II and (perimembranous) VSD will be echoed hands-on in small groups. Children with these cardiac defects and their parents are volunteering to make this unique hands-on training possible.

Pediatric cardiac interventionalists Matthias Freund (Germany), Maiy El Sayed (Egypt), Naomi Gachara (Kenya) and Christine Awuor Yuko-Jowi (Kenya) will perform the hands-on course.

SPACE IS LIMITED! PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Please confirm your attendance by email to s.kolkova@cme4u.org by Friday, November 24, 2017.
